2020 marks both the 160th anniversary of the establishment of a museum of antiquities at the University of Sydney, and the exciting next chapter in the history of the Nicholson collection as we prepare for the opening of the Chau Chak Wing Museum in late August.
This night will celebrate the history of the Nicholson Museum and its collections, from its humble beginnings as the ‘Nicholsonian’ museum in small rooms under the clocktower of the Quadrangle, through to its present location under MacLaurin Hall and looking forward to its exciting future.
Dr Craig Barker, Candace Richards and Dr James Fraser of the Nicholson Museum will each present on aspects of the history of the collection; from Sir Charles Nicholson and the foundations of a campus collection, to the early 20th century when the museum expanded through connections with some of the most-significant archaeological projects in Egypt, the Middle East and the Mediterranean, and to its rebirth in the 1960s as a modern teaching museum.
