Abstract:Generationofhotcarriersintransitionmetalcatalyststhroughphotoexcitationhasbeendemonstratedtobeapromisingapproachcapableofsignificantlyloweringactivationtemperatureofthecatalysts,whichcouldhaveawidespreadimpactonsubstantiallyreducingthecurrentenergydemandsandimprovingtheselectivityofheterogeneouscatalysis.PlasmonicnanoparticlesmadeofAu,Ag,Cu,andAlarerecentlyfocusedbecausetheycanactivelyabsorblightatthecorrespondingsurfaceplasmonresonance(SPR)frequencies,whichareusuallyinthevisiblespectralregion.Thehighopticalabsorptionsleadtothegenerationofhotcarriersinplasmonicnanoparticles,onwhichthehotcarrierscandirectlydrivechemicaltransformations.Despitethepromise,plasmonicmetalnanoparticlesarenotusefulcatalystsforawiderangeofimportantreactions.Incontrast,platinum-groupmetals(PGMs)suchasPt,Pd,RuorRhareexcellentcatalyticmaterialsbutexhibitSPRintheultraviolet(UV)spectralregion,whichrepresentsasignificantdisadvantageforphotocatalysisduetothepooroverlapwiththesolarspectrum.AlthoughincreasingsizeofPGMnanoparticlesshiftsSPRabsorptiontothered,itincreasescostandreducessurfaceareaandthuscatalyticactivity.Moreover,increasingthesizeofmetalnanocrystalssignificantlyreducestheyieldofhotelectrongeneration,loweringtheefficiencyofphotochemicalenergyconversion.Inthispresentation,anewlightabsorptionmodelwillbediscussedtodemonstrateatransformativewaytoenhanceopticalabsorptioninsmallPGMnanoparticlesinthevisiblespectralregionbyadjustingtheirdielectricenvironmentinsteadofchangingtheirsize.Inthismodel,the“quantum-sized”metalnanocrystalsareattachedtosurfacesoftransparentsilicaspheres,whichcansupportavarietyofdielectricscatteringresonances(e.g.,Fabry-PerotorWhisperingGallerymodesdependingonthesizeofsilicaspheres)capableofcreatingstrongelectricfieldsnearthesilicasurface.Theintensifiednearfieldscandramaticallyenhancetheabsorptioncross-sectionofthemetalnanocrystals,whichareonthesilicasurface,thusimprovingtheyieldof“hotelectrons”inthemetalnanocrystals.ThisnewmodelprovidesauniqueopportunitytoefficientlygeneratehotcarriersinthePMGmetalnanoparticlesuponexcitationofsolarenergy.Biography:Dr.YugangSunobtainedhisB.SandPh.DdegreefromUniversityofScienceandTechnologyofChina(USTC)in1996and2001,respectively.HethenworkedasapostdoctoralfellowwithProf.YounanXiaattheUniversityofWashingtonandProf.JohnA.RogersattheUniversityofIllinoisatUrbana-Champaign.In2006,Dr.SunjoinedtheCenterforNanoscaleMaterialsatArgonneNationalLaboratory(ANL)tostarthisindependentresearchcareer.HemovedtoChemistryDepartmentofTempleUniversityinJanuary2016.HereceivedthePresidentialEarlyCareerAwardforScientistsandEngineers(PECASE)in2007andDOE’sOfficeofScienceEarlyCareerScientistandEngineeringAwardin2008.Hisworkhasasignificantimpactthefieldofnanomaterials,andhewaslistedinthetop100chemists(#62)andtop100Materialsscientists(#5)analyzedbyThomsonReutersin2011.Hisresearchiscenteredinthedesign/synthesisofhybridnanostructuresaswellasinvestigationofnovelpropertiesofthesynthesizednanostructuresinthecontextofnanophotonics,photocatalysis,sensing,andenergystorage/conversion.

Abstract:Symmetry,interactionandtopologicaleffects,aswellasenvironmentalscreening,dominatemanyofthequantumpropertiesofreduced-dimensionalsystemsandnanostructures.Theseeffectsoftenleadtomanifestationofcounter-intuitiveconceptsandphenomenathatmaynotbesoprominentorhavenotbeenseeninbulkmaterials.Inthistalk,Ipresentsomefascinatingphysicalphenomenadiscoveredinrecentstudiesofatomicallythinone-dimensional(1D)andtwo-dimensional(2D)materials.Anumberofhighlyinterestingandunexpectedbehaviorshavebeenfound–e.g.,stronglyboundexcitons(electron-holepairs)withunusualenergylevelstructuresandnewtopology-dictatedopticalselectionrules;tunablemagnetismandplasmonicproperties;noveltopologicalphases;correlatedmulti-particleexcitations;etc.–addingtothepromiseof1Dand2Dmaterialsforexplorationofnewscienceandvaluableapplications. 报告摘要:海洋微生物、动植物在海洋设施表面的粘附、生长形成海洋生物污损,它对海洋工业和海洋活动有深刻的影响。海洋污损会增加舰船的航行阻力,削弱海军的战斗力;增加舰船重量,从而增加能耗和二氧化碳的排放量。海洋污损会堵塞核电站的输水管路,从而降低其冷热交换效率,甚至引发核事故;它还会阻碍潮汐发电、抽海水蓄能电站中发电机的运转。海洋污损会缩小海水养殖网箱的网孔,导致鱼虾的大面积死亡。总之,海洋防污是一个与能源、环境、国防等国家重大战略需求相关的课题,但也是一个国际性的难题。本报告将介绍海洋防污材料的历史、现状和最新进展,特别是报告人有关“动态表面海洋防污”的策略和生物降解高分子基海洋防污材料。报告人简介:张广照,教育部“长江学者”特聘教授,国家杰出青年基金获得者,科技部重大研究计划项目首席科学家。本科毕业于四川大学(1987),复旦大学博士(1998),香港中文大学(1999-2001)和美国麻省大学(2001-2002)博士后。2002年任中国科学技术大学化学物理系、合肥微尺度国家实验室(筹)教授。2010年任华南理工大学高分子材料科学与工程系教授。目前担任国际海洋材料保护研究常设委员会(COIPM)委员,中国材料研究学会高分子材料与工程分会副主任,广东省化学会高分子化学专业委员会主任。先后任Macromolecules(2012-2014),ACSMacroLetters(2012-2014),MacromolecularChemistryandPhysics,ChineseJouralofPolymerScience,《高分子材料科学与工程》编委。主要从事高分子物理化学(溶液与界面)方面的工作,包括大分子构象行为与相互作用的基础研究,以及海洋防污材料、岩土工程材料的应用研究。
